The Loire is the longest river in France. With a length of 1,012 kilometres, it drains an area of 117,054kmĀ², which represents more than a fifth of France's land area. It is the 170th longest river in the world. The Val de Loire is a World Heritage Site which covers 280km continuously along the Loire Valley between Sully-sur-loire (Loiret) et Chalon-sur-loire (Maine et Loire). It is composed of 160 municipalities. La Chapelle-sur-loire is one and is represented by a wind vane located outside the 'Maison Loire et Nature' museum opposite the quay. The Wind Vane has become the hallmark of the Loire's heritage. Formerly, the boat men, who depended on the west wind (The Galerne) to move goods on the Loire, were proud of their wind vanes which were attached to the top of the mast of their traditional flat bottomed boats. We are proud that our local boatmen's club sail and construct these traditional Vessels in La Chapelle today. In the summer they provide a ferry service across the loire from the La Chapelle-sur-loire quay. (You can check the timetable posted on the quay for the sailing times)
